On September 10, 2026, the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines (PCAPI) successfully conducted a timely and insightful webinar titled “Climate Resilience in Action: Understanding El Niño and Its Impacts.” This virtual event aimed to deepen understanding of El Niño’s wide-ranging effects and highlight strategies to enhance community resilience amid climate-related challenges.

The webinar began with a warm welcome from Ms. Luzviminda Angeles, President of PCAPI, who emphasized the importance of recognizing and preparing for El Niño’s impacts. She underscored that increased awareness and knowledge sharing are key to mitigating the adverse environmental and socio-economic consequences of this recurring climate phenomenon.

The keynote sessions featured two distinguished speakers: Engr. Lorenzon Moron, Weather Service Chief of PAGASA NCR, provided an overview of Hydro-Meteorological Hazards Associated with El Niño. His presentation included an in-depth discussion on early warning systems and preparedness measures vital for reducing disaster risks. Engr. Moron also elaborated on the complexities of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), explaining how climate information can be effectively harnessed to enhance disaster preparedness and fortify community resilience across vulnerable areas.

Following this, Ms. Namnama Ganotisi, Science Research Specialist I from the Technological Services Division of DOST-ITDI, shared innovative adaptation strategies and best practices designed to build resilience against El Niño’s impacts. Her insights covered ongoing scientific research and practical initiatives that support sustainable resource management and climate adaptation, crucial for safeguarding livelihoods in affected communities.

The webinar was expertly hosted by Mr. Jeremiah Dwight Sebastian, Vice President for External Affairs of PCAPI, who facilitated engaging dialogue and ensured that participants could fully benefit from the rich exchange of knowledge.

Overall, the event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including environmental professionals, government agencies, researchers, and community advocates, all united by a common goal: to strengthen climate resilience in the Philippines. Through comprehensive discussions on early warning systems, preparedness measures, and resilience-building innovations, the webinar reinforced the vital role of informed action in confronting the challenges posed by El Niño.
